Capturing Family Moments

August 24, 2017

Looking back at holiday photos can bring a great deal of happiness and spark memories of all the fun you had, but most of us end up with lots of wasted pictures alongside the few that make the cut into an album or frame. Most people use a mobile phone to take photographs on a daily basis, and this means we are constantly recording our lives, but are we making the most of the opportunity?

Some holiday resorts offer a resident photographer, but this can be expensive and end up with a slightly unnatural result. Brushing up your photography technique could endure that you end up with some classic, candid holiday shots that bring back the happy memories and transport you back to those endless summers once your children are grown up.

Taking Great Family Photographs On Your Holiday:

  1. Think about the light. The way in which a scene is lit makes the difference between a dark and dingy result and a vibrant, interesting photograph. Try to make an effort to notice the light as you move through your day, noting when the sun is highlighting a subject and which side of a scene would offer you the best lighting for a good result.
  2. Take an action shot. A posed shot of all the family might be a good present for the grandparents, but it isn’t likely to capture all the fun of a family holiday. Taking action shots while the children are trying out new activities, or getting a photograph of them all laughing together can make for a really special memory that transports you back to the moment.
  3. Notice the scene. If you want to capture a particular scene or view, try to make sure you get the best of it. Taking a picture that includes lots of traffic, or an obstructive object, can result in a disappointing effect, so consider how you can make the most of your subject and whether you can frame it between nearby trees, for example, rather than blocking the view by choosing an awkward angle to take it from.
  4. Make it fun. No one wants to see photos of their family looking miserable, but if you can get everyone smiling, you’re sure to create an image to treasure. Try to capture moments when your family are enjoying some spontaneous holiday fun, but if that’s not happening, having a joke or two up your sleeve could help!
  5. Be prepared. Running out of charge in your camera is a photographer’s worst nightmare, so be sure to plan ahead to prevent this problem. If you use your mobile phone to take photographs, it may run down very quickly, so ensure you have enough chargers, or portable power packs, to guarantee that you won’t run out of battery when you need it most.
