Holidays And Toddler Tantrums

May 19, 2017

family holiday is a great time to relax and enjoy spending time together, but if you’re parenting a toddler, you may find that the change to his or her normal routine leads to upsets and meltdowns. It’s hardly surprising, since these little people are discovering their place in the world and adjusting to new situations can be tricky, but there are many things you can do to ease the transition.

Here at Trabolgan Holiday Village, we’ve designed a family friendly choice of activities and entertainment so that your little ones can get involved and have a great time, but if it all gets a little too much, check out our handy hints to cope with toddler tantrums while you’re on holiday.

Handy Hints For Coping With Toddler Tantrums On Holiday

  1. Be prepared. Holidays are a wonderful opportunity to make family memories to treasure forever, but don’t forget that they can be unsettling for little ones. Leaving your home and travelling somewhere else can be confusing, and expecting your child to stick to his or her usual sleeping and eating routine amidst this change may be unrealistic.
  2. Choose carefully. Planning ahead can prevent many problems on holiday, so ensure that you book a destination that is set up for small children. If the staff and other holidaymakers are used to toddlers and won’t be horrified by any frustrated behavior, you’ll all have a much more relaxing time.
  3. Focus on food. Hunger can have a huge effect on a child’s mood, and making sure that you can always access food that your child will eat is crucial. Self-catering is often the easiest option when you have small children, as you can take food that you know they like and have it on hand whenever they’re feeling peckish.
  4. Don’t scrimp on sleep. If your child still takes a nap during the day, don’t be tempted to cut it out while you’re on holiday, and always ensure that he or she still gets a good amount of sleep, even if a few late nights are involved. Getting less sleep than usual may lead to meltdowns, so it’s worth encouraging a good sleep routine even while you are away.
  5. Don’t expect too much. If you’ve planned a week of exploring museums and dining in exclusive restaurants, don’t be surprised if your child can’t cope. You’ll all be a lot more relaxed if you pitch your holiday to cope with the needs of your youngest child, and this is more likely to be achieved with picnic breaks in playgrounds and chilling out on the beach than a cultural tour of a city.
