‘Are We There Yet?’ How To Make Your Car Journey Go Faster

July 10, 2017

Travelling with children isn’t always easy, but when you want to see the world and enjoy all the fabulous experiences that family holidays can bring, it’s often a necessity.

We’ve been thinking about how you can make your journey pass more quickly, and avoid some of the negative aspects of the trip.

Tips For Car Journeys With Children

  1. Plan your journey. Think ahead and plan which route you will take to your destination, taking into account factors such as the weather and any roadworks that may affect your route. Consider where you will stop if you are travelling a long way, and think about whether you will take a picnic or eat at a restaurant on the way.
  2. Get the kids involved. If your children are excited about your destination and see the journey as part of the experience, it’s likely to be more fun for all of you. Find some games such as I Spy that the whole family can join in with, or invest in some spotter cards or books to keep everyone entertained.
  3. Resort to technology. Although many experts believe that children have too much access to technology today, handheld devices can certainly come in useful while travelling. If your children can handle some screen time while you drive, the journey is likely to pass more quickly. Audio books are another excellent option if you’re driving, and you can take turns selecting or choose a longer book that everyone will enjoy.
  4. Pre-empt complaints. Do you frequently drive to a soundtrack of ‘I’m bored’ and ‘Are we nearly there?’?  Catch your kids before these questions by keeping them updated on your progress – and being positive about it – and packing some toys or snacks that they haven’t seen before or that are a special treat.
  5. Time your travel. Depending on how long your journey is, you may be able to time it to make it easier on your children. If they can run around outside before the journey and use up some energy, this can help to prevent frustrations, and a midway break in the fresh air can also be very helpful. When you arrive, don’t expect everyone to be instantly on top form, but allow the children and yourselves time to recover from the journey and wind down before you attempt to begin your holiday.
