Travelling With Children: Tips To Make Car Journeys More Fun

1. Plan breaks. If you’re travelling for long periods of time, ensure that you take regular breaks to make the journey bearable for young children. Plan to stop every hour or so, depending on your child’s needs and routine, and take the time to use toilets, stretch your legs and eat snacks.

2. Consider entertainment. Listening to audio books can be a great way to keep the kids engaged while you are driving, and personal MP3 players can ensure that older ones can listen to something they love. Some families find that watching a film or playing on a handheld device works well in the car, and others prepare by offering new games or toys at intervals during long journeys.

3. Play games. Traditional games are a great way to keep the family happy while you are driving, and popular options such as I Spy and 20 Questions can help children to learn as well as prevent boredom. Take turns to choose a game and play along, but ensure that the driver is always able to concentrate on the road first and foremost!

4. Pack snacks. Never leave home without snacks and a drink if you are travelling with children, unless you are prepared to spend your holiday money on expensive purchases en route! Pack a selection of healthy snacks that won’t cause a sugar rush in the car, and ensure you have plenty of water in case of breakdowns or heavy traffic.

5. Relax when you arrive. The journey is often the most stressful part of the holiday, and it’s important to give yourself a chance to relax and recuperate once you arrive. Don’t plan to jump straight into activities and events as soon as you have unpacked, but ensure you have time to sit down with a cup of tea before you start to explore.
