Stay Safe In The Sun This Summer

July 6, 2017

School’s almost out, the sun is shining, and you’re heading off for a fantastic family break at Trabolgan Holiday Village. You can look forward to a great holiday, with plenty to keep the whole family entertained, and we hope that the sun will shine for you on your holiday!

Of course, we all love the sunshine but it’s vital to keep yourself and your family safe in the sun. Following our safe sun advice will help you to avoid sunburn and make sure that you have a great time in the sunshine together.

Keep Your Children Safe In The Sun

Experts advise that we all need exposure to the sun, and that for ten minutes each day, we should expose as much of our skin as we can to the sun in order to create the vitamin D that keeps our bones healthy. However, it is easy to spend too long in the sunshine without giving a thought to sun protection, and this can often end in painful and dangerous burns. Protect your skin by following our simple safe sun guide:

  1. Cover up.  By far the safest way to protect yourself and your children from the damaging UV rays of the sun is to cover your skin with long sleeved/full length clothing in light fabrics. Once you’ve had your healthy level of exposure for the day, cover up so that you can all continue to enjoy being in the outdoors without the risk of burning – but be aware that when it’s really hot, it’s possible to get sunburned through your clothing so keep checking!
  2. Cool down. If you’re outside on a very hot day, you’ll need to take plenty of breaks and cool down in the shade. Make the most of cool drinks, encouraging your children to keep sipping, too, and find indoor activities so that you can take a break if you feel that the sun is relentless. There’s plenty to do indoors at Trabolgan, so you can have the best of both worlds!
  3. Be careful when swimming. If you’re swimming outdoors, be aware that the water can wash off your sunblock, and that wet clothing offers much less protection from the sun than dry. UV protective swimwear can be a great solution, allowing your kids to play in the sun and in the water without the risk of burning.
  4. Use sunblock when necessary. Although some experts are concerned about the chemicals in sun cream and sunblock, you may wish to use these if you do not have access to shade or if you will be in unusually high temperatures, such as on holiday abroad. Many creams contain more natural ingredients, so are safer for children, and you should ensure that you apply enough to protect you for the maximum amount of time.
