A handy beginners guide to golf

Why learn to play golf?

There are several reasons, so let’s look at a few. Learning to golf gets us outside and into the fresh air, when we have been stuck in the office all week. An 18-hole round of golf, far exceeds the 10,000 steps-per-day rule recommended for weight loss. In addition to being great physical exercise, golfing – like all exercise- is good for our mental health. The pleasure of walking in fresh air and socialising – with the added need for focus and concentration – means golf releases endorphins, the natural mood-enhancing chemicals in our brain, which make us happy and relaxed.

Here are some quick tips to get your golfing career off to a good start:

  1. Get a set of custom clubs: Clubs that are modified specifically for your body shape and swing will go a long way in improving your golf skills. They don’t have to cost a fortune, invest in an affordable set of clubs or a used set, and have them customised at a golf shop to suit your needs.
  2. Find a home course: Getting comfortable on the golf course is one of the biggest challenges new players face. This makes it all the more important to find a course where you can play the majority of your yearly rounds. In addition to gaining experience on the course, this gives you an opportunity to meet new people and form teams for competitions.
  3. Practice at home: It may not always be possible to make it to the golf course – work and family commitments, and the Irish weather gets in the way! In which case, you have to get creative and do drills at home. Pretend that you’re holding a club, get into your stance, and hold it for a few seconds. While you hold it, check your positions in the mirror. To make this stance feel as natural possible, repeat this multiple times.

Finding a pass-time you enjoy is always a good thing. It’s important to make time for pleasant activities as our lives get more hectic. Golf is a low impact sport suitable for all physical abilities, it is a great way to improve fitness, reduce stress and socialise.
