5 Great Meals Kids Can Cook!

March 20, 2018

Getting kids into the kitchen is a great way to teach them essential life skills, give them a sense of achievement and increase their contribution to your household. Starting out, cooking with children will take time and patience, but as they become more accomplished, you can look forward to enjoying the fruits of their labours as they grow older.

Here at Trabolgan, it’s all about family time and this year we’ve made some changes to make your family break even better. You’ll love our covered Plaza area and the upgrades to several of our accommodation options, and whether you’re competing with the kids in exciting new activities or cooking together in your self catering holiday home, you’ll have the time of your life at Trabolgan.

Great Meal Ideas That Kids Can Cook:

Children love to help, and teaching them cookery skills when they are young is a great way to give them a lifelong love of food, as well as encouraging them to look after their health. Let them help you out initially, and you’ll be surprised at how quickly they are coming up with creations of their own! Here are some of our favourite meal ideas for children to cook:

1. Soup. Soup is not only a great way to get a whole range of vegetables into your kids, it’s also a fabulous way to introduce them to cooking and flavour. Children love to chop, so let them loose with a chopping board and a child safety knife – or supervise them with your knives and see how quickly they learn to stay safe. Let them chop a pile of veggies and add them to a pan, then experiment with herbs and spices and add stock. Blending a soup is a great way to placate picky eaters, but they’re also much more likely to give new foods a go if they’ve had a hand in creating them.

2. Pizza. Pizza dough is even easier to make than bread dough, as it does not need the same amount of rising time. Kids love to mix dough and learn to knead, and rolling out their own pizza base and selecting toppings is a fabulous way to make food fun.

3. Pasta. Creating a whole meal for the family is a hugely rewarding activity, and cooking a pan full of pasta and making a sauce will be a great first experience. A basic tomato sauce with onions, garlic, basil and chopped tomatoes can take minutes to make and an appreciative audience of diners can encourage this to become a regular event in your home.

4. Eggs. Eggs are very versatile and learning to make the most of them is a skill that your children will certainly appreciate in the future. Start with scrambled eggs, then introduce boiling and poaching when your child can handle the dangers of boiling water, and you’ll give your child an impressive repertoire for the future.

5. Jacket potatoes. This is another great staple meal idea, great for little hands that aren’t up to cooking with hot liquids on the hob yet. You can help even the tiniest children to pop some potatoes into the oven, and then let them get creative with the fillings they choose.  Are You
